Hurricane Laura has come and gone after slamming the Gulf Coast but the clean-up is only beginning.

“The state of Louisiana hasn’t seen a hurricane like this, ever,” says 8 Days of Hope founder Steve Tybor. “The strength and the amount of damage is widespread.” According to the 8 Days website, the Category 4 hurricane hit with 150 MPH winds that left more than 400,000 without power.

“There are large amounts of areas that have no power,” Tybor reports. “It looks like the Lake Charles area, as of the report we got last night, could be without power as much as four to six weeks yet.”

8 Days of Hope is on the ground – and looking for help with the cleanup. Because the area around Lake Charles where Laura made landfall is still an active disaster area, 8 Days is looking for volunteers who are 18 or older. 8 Days plans to remain in the area through early October.

Ministry serving in own backyard

A Texas organization known for its missions work overseas is helping people closer to home. Gospel for Asia is headquartered in Wills Point, Texas, near Dallas, and is recognized as a longtime leader in mission work. In its own backyard, Gospel for Asia (GFA) passed out 1,200 food boxes in July and August.

Gospel for Asia (GFA) spokesman Danny Yohannan says the ministry is partnering with Body of Life to help people in several counties impacted by the shutdown.

The next distribution will be September 18 and the expectation is 2,000 people will show up to receive the boxes of food.
