If you think about global and regional disasters, the devastating hurricanes in the US, earthquakes and tsunamis in South East Asia, in all of these cases criminals have never met a human crisis that they were not willing to take advantage of. Whether it’s soliciting donations for relief charities that don’t exist, redirecting donated emergency supplies for sale on the black market, to looting the businesses and homes in disaster areas, there seems to be no limit to exactly how far they’re willing to go.
In the wake of the current COVID 19 crisis globally, one would suspect if there’s any sense of a silver lining, it might be the notion that in the middle of all of this, with people sheltering in place and staying at home, and the necessary reduction in human contact, hopefully and prayerfully, we would see an equal reduction in human trafficking. After all, with all of us in lockdown, modern day slave trade must have at least slowed down, if not stalled altogether, right? Well, if that’s what you think, you’d be wrong. If anything the global pandemic has only heightened the desperation of those at risk, deepened the cunning of traffickers, and created even greater degrees of suffering for people who are most vulnerable in society in the world today.
To help us better understand what’s going on, and most importantly, how we as believers can and should be doing something, Pastor KP Yohannan, founder and director of Gospel for Asia (GFA World) joins Craig Roberts on KFAX Radio’s “Lifeline with Craig Roberts” to discuss this pertinent issue of modern slavery, human trafficking amid COVID 19.
