A mission agency is challenging Christian families to reject the commercialization of Christmas and instead focus on those in poverty who have never heard why the Christ-child came to earth.
Industry experts estimate that Americans will spend a trillion dollars on Christmas – that’s an average of $920 per person – so Gospel for Asia is asking Americans to remember the estimated 300 million forgotten outcasts.
It can be easy for Christ to be pushed aside during Christmas, says GFA spokesman Daniel Yohannan, but he urges Christian families to act, beginning with prayer.
“And what do we pray?” he asks rhetorically. “We pray for those around the world who don’t know about the Christmas story to have the opportunity to hear and to join us in this glorious celebration.”
The second action, he says, is for people to evaluate their lives and resources, time and energy.
“What can we do to bless others around us and our families,” he says, “but also not to create waste and create this thinking that it’s all about us?”
